STUCK IN THE MIDDLE is a 20minute performance that was for The Other MA End of year show show at The Old Water Works in Southend 2025.
Vegas’ earlier performances have explored themes of mental health, epilepsy, grief, and addiction. Stuck in the Middlemarks one of her first works to move deeper into questions of race and identity — asking what it means to be British when you are mixed-race and never feel fully at home anywhere.
This 20-minute performance confronts the audience with a collage of familiar popular music recontextualised into something unsettling and new. Chaos, a recurring thread in Vegas’ practice, shapes the work through marching, shouting, dancing, and water — elements that shift with every iteration of the performance. Plaster shuttlecocks are launched only to shatter, symbolising fragility, impact, and the inevitability of breaking.
At the heart of the piece is a personal narrative: the artist wearing her former RAF Cadet uniform, reflecting on the moment she chose to pursue art instead of serving in the military. The work suggests that there are many forms of battle, and that each of us faces our own, every day.
